Alice In Wonderland – Bonkers

0

Something that has risen in popularity over the past year or so, is quotes being displayed n the home.  It can be painted, in a piece of art work, vinyl wall stickers and even plaques.  The whole idea of picking a meaningful quote and displaying it in your front room for the whole world to see, is one that resonates with many people, it is about sharing a piece of yourself and your family.  Or of course it could just be something that you love.

A more unusual way to show off your favourite quote is through the medium of wood and the process of upcycling.  We came across the lovely Vicki Brand of Brand Designs, who creates little masterpieces out of reclaimed wood.  Her work is impeccable and truly unique, how do we know?  Well, Vicki kindly sent us two Alice in Wonderland themed quote boards that she made from scratch.

The quality and workmanship in each board is absolutely incredible and they are suited to either indoor or outdoor use, Vicki just needs to know if you are going to put one outside so it can be treated accordingly.  These boards feature two quote (personal favourites it has to be said), from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.  The wood has been treated, sanded and securely fixed together.  It is then adorned with the quote of your choice and even comes with hangers attached.

We caught up with Vicki to find out more about her and the wonderful craft she does.

Tell us about yourself.

I started doing carpentry a year and a half ago after I couldn’t find any furniture to fit my tiny cottage in Hertford. My dad started teaching me some basic skills and I loved it so wanted to develop and learn how to do more. Friends and family members started to comment on my work so I got online and started getting orders that way. I love doing this type of work and it’s so rewarding making pieces out of upcycled wood.

I work with scaffold boards, oak offcuts, pallets and anything else I can get my hands on. You can be creative with all different types and sizes of wood – and since it would be a shame to waste anything, I started looking at other options. I made some door signs and everything developed from there. I love making the quote boards especially when it’s a really thought provoking piece!

What is a normal day like for you?

I get to the workshop first thing and I’ll work on a few drawings of designs and then spend the afternoon creating something new. I love to experiment with new pieces and always have a different design on the go.

I start by selecting a pallet, taking it to pieces using a custom made tool, cutting the wood to size, sanding it down and then selecting similar coloured pieces and stencilling the boards with the chosen quote. Once this is all dry, I’ll fix the wood together depending on the specification.

image1Do you have any favourite quotes?

I love Alice in Wonderland and the wacky mind of Lewis Carrol, my favourites from this book are;

“You’re entirely bonkers, but let me tell you a secret, all the best people are.”

“Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality.”

“The little girl just could not sleep because her thoughts were way too deep, her mind had gone out for a stroll and fallen down the rabbit hole…”

I also love quotes by Einstein (“Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”), Samuel Becket (“Ever Tried, Ever Failed, No Matter, Try Again, Fail Better.”) and Tolkein (“Not all who wander are lost.”)

My favourite book?

Aside from Alice in Wonderland, I’d have to choose Shantaram – I love it when a book opens my mind to a new culture. And I love travelling the world!
