We got the chance to talk to an Founder and CEO of an interesting “skinny” product and we got to talking about work and life.
Hi, Amanda, for those of us who don’t know you, who are you and what do you do.
I’m Amanda Thomson, a former BBC arts broadcaster and journalist turned producer of sparkling wine with a very popular twist.
What is your product and why should we drink it?
Thomson & Scott Skinny Champagne Brut and Rosé, and Skinny Prosecco DOC. Our champagnes are created in the Grand Cru village of Verzy in the Champagne region, and are “zero dosage”. This means that they don’t contain the measure of processed sugar commonly used in champagne production. Skinny Prosecco is crafted in Italy’s prestigious Soligo region, and is certified vegan, organic and half the sugar of traditional Prosecco. All my sparkling wines are naturally delicious, crisp, refreshing and very, very drinkable!
To us, its a strange direction in life to take, but what got you into this line of work?
I was brought up vegetarian and sugar-free by a health food pioneer mother, so you could say that an awareness of healthy eating and drinking is in my DNA. You could also say I like to party! In my broadcasting career I interviewed the likes of George Clooney fuelled on a diet of champagne and canapés. I loved every second, but a fascination with wine refused to go away. So I moved to Paris with my young family, enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu and started studying. One night at a wine tasting I met zero dosage Champagne producer Alexandre Prenet and had my eureka! moment.
Why go with the title as Skinny Champagne or Skinny Prosecco?
It’s all about the sugar, and avoidance of unnecessary chemicals and ingredients. Our Skinny Champagne is zero dosage, while our Skinny Prosecco contains around half the regular amount of sugar. Both still have the characteristic taste that makes sommeliers excited, and the same alcohol content.
What is the last book you read and what did you enjoy about it?
I’m currently immersed in a stack of business books and sugar related books, all non fiction – top of the pile are Girl Boss which is the perfect entrepreneur inspiration and The Case Against Sugar which plays right into my brands hands headlining sugar’s toxicity.
What else should be on the look out for from your brand?
We’re pretty busy! First on the agenda is global expansion. We’re already in Italy, France, Ireland, the Seychelles, Qatar and Denmark. We’ve just launched in Boston ahead of going across the US. We’re also in talks with Australia, Canada and New Zealand. We want to be a carbon neutral company by the end of 2017 and are pretty excited about some of the new packaging innovations out there. And we’ll have a brand new announcement over the next few months.
Good to hear. Thanks for the chat. Where can we find your work?
