Atlier – Netflix S01E01 Review

As part of our try something new and different I rolled the dice on Netflix and got this.

“Mayuko steps into a curious new world: the lingerie industry, on her first day of work the office is busy with an upcoming floor show”.

A Japanese Drama about lingerie. MMMM…. what have I signed up for!!!

Scene By Scene Thoughts

Out of place Mayuko looking to make her mark on the fashion industry.  She works for “Emotion”.

It is interesting seeing an office dynamic from the fashion industry.  It feels like its parodying “Ugly Betty” in a way or Devil Wears Prada, but that is due to me watching more American movies than Japanese.

“You’re Tacky”

Sent on errands, Mayuko is made to feel like she is so out of place.

It interesting listening to the boss’s passion for her product when the press come to visit.

“I am aware of all the noise around me”

Mayuko continues to find her feet and finds friends in the office.  While her boss alienates her.

The Boss versus Mayuko Verbal Fight

It was bound to happen with the boss acting high and mighty – Mayuko finally cracked.  The boss takes her to an art gallery an explains the idea of beauty in her products again.

“So smile and do your best”

Mayuko finds her voice and continues to argue with the boss.  Functional Beauty.

The Trunk Show

Dam, a lingerie show.  This is the bit where the male brain kicks out.  Mayuko is happy her thoughts were accounted for in a design in the show.

Boss wants what she wants.

Will I go back to it?

It is a character drama more than anything. It flows well with even some comedic bits in it.  The boss versus employee dynamic is good with grey areas for exploring each character.

Loved the choice of music for each scene – went well together.

Overall Score

4/5  – Good stuff.  It holds character drama at the forefront with its true subject Beauty in its many shapes high up there too.
