Cappuccino claims the top spot for UK’s favourite daily grind
With reports last month announcing the US has fallen out of love with the cappuccino in favour of the trendy flat white, it seems UK lovers of the frothy coffee have nothing to fear – it still holds the top spot over this side of the Atlantic.
Data released by coffee company rijo42 shows that of the 42 million drinks it has sold across the UK in the last two years, cappuccino still makes up the lion’s share, with 22 per cent of the market.
However, the figures from rijo42, which is the UK’s leading supplier of commercial coffee machines, coffee beans and coffee ingredients, do show there is a close runner up in the UK’s coffee affections – the moccacino.
Making up 18 per cent of the firm’s coffee sales, a moccacino is a traditional cappuccino with added chocolate.
rijo42’s top five selling coffees over the past 24 months have been:
1 – Cappuccino (22%)
2 – Moccacino (18%)
3 – White coffee (16%)
4 – Cafe latte (15%)
5 – Latte Macchiato (7%) (where the espresso is added after the milk, to create a layered effect)
Despite not making the top five, the more caffeine-fuelled kick of espresso and black coffee are still firm favourites with a combined one in 10 coffee-lovers.
Luis Nino, director at rijo42, said: “When we saw the story that some US coffee shops were stopping advertising cappuccino on their boards, we knew that wouldn’t be the case in the UK, as it most definitely remains the preferred drink over here. There’s zero chance it will be leaving the menu any time soon – it’s no has-bean! In fact, with the figures for cappuccino and moccacino, which is a form of cappuccino, combined, our retailers have sold almost 17 million in the last two years, making up 40 per cent of the coffee they sell.
“Coffee really has become such a key part of the UK’s beverage culture in the last decade – and has moved on so much from the days when the only decision you needed to make was whether to add milk and sugar. Every six months the people we supply sell enough coffee to fill an Olympic size swimming pool – not that you’d fancy a dip in it!”
