Championship Weekend Roundup 30th August (And T.T.D)

Championship Results and Transfer Deadline Day

The final weekend of action before the transfer window closes. It couldn’t be a weirder day of action.

Weekend – Saturday 30th August

sheff wed

Sheffield Wednesday 0 – Nottingham Forest 1

Today’s early action saw allot of missed chances from the home team to lead to their first defeat this season.  Forest now have 6 wins in the seven game this season.

Brighton 2 – Charlton 2

Brighton have been very hit or miss, with them needing a injury time header from Lewis Dunk to grab a point from this easy three point fixture.  Charlton are continuing to be a surprise package this season with them remaining unbeaten in five games.

Derby 1 – Ipswich 1

The battle of a good and a scrappy team. Chris Martin got the opener for Derby and a free kick led to a Berra header for the equaliser. Ipswich’s possession in the second half looked better leading to them getting back in the game, and with the injury to Derby player Jeff Hendrick – Derby look to regroup.

Fulham 1 – Cardiff 1

Fulham have now moved off the bottom with the first point of the season. Fulham a team destined to go back up –  have not been the team expected so far. Cardiff controlled the early going but struggled in front of Goal.

Elland Road

Leeds 1 -Bolton 0

Teams battling a the bottom for a point. Leeds took the lead in the 17 minute and it took a great goalkeeping performance by Silverstri, to keep the points. Dougie Freedman will look to sort out the team before the window is out – but what can he do?

Middlesbrough 0 – Reading 1

The third successive lost at home for Middlesbrough led to questions over Karanka’s men.  Middlesbrough started brightly but lost out when Cox applied a great finish to a cross.  Middlesbrough are looking to regroup and get the spirit back in the group. Reading Manager Adkins said after the game that 16 players were unavailable before the game. How did they grab that then?

Millwall 2 – Blackpool 1

Blackpool are still without a point and now sit bottom of the table.  The scrappy game ended with the more together team beating the team put together this year.

Norwich 1 – Bournemouth 1

Norwich were held to a point by a good Bournemouth performance. Norwich took the lead with Grabban but leveled near the end of the first half with a Callum Wilson shot.

Rotherham 0 – Brentford 2

The two teams that went up together looked to be progressing on different rates, Brentford showed they are going to be safe while Rotherham’s stop start does not look good so far.

Watford 4 – Huddersfield 2

After been reduced to 10 men, Watford managed to score twice against still manager less Huddersfield. Huddersfield have a lot to do defensively now. Watford meanwhile, have at the time of writing – have to deal with their manager leaving. You don’t see many managers leaving after a good 3 points.

Wigan 4 – Birmingham 0

3-0 up at half time, Birmingham never turned up to it. Wigan dominated from start to finish with only late chances available for Birmingham to save grace.

Wolves 3 -Blackburn 1

Wolves are building up steam with a great performance against fellow promotion contenders Blackburn.  Can Wolves make it two runs at the title in a row.

Transfer Deadline Day

Top Promotion Rebuilders-

Most teams have their teams built – but two contenders on deadline day did a lot of business.

Norwich –

They have looked to rebuild their defense with signings of Ignasi Miquel (Arsenal), Hooiveld (Southamption – Loan)  and a midfielder Louis Thompson (Swindon).

Wigan –

4 Signings on the last day show their intentions to go up this year.  Adam Forshaw (Midfield – Brentford), Andy Delort (Striker – FC Tours), Emyr Huws (was loan but now contracted) and William Kvist (Free).

Current Relegation Rebuilders –

Most Active Team in the window has to go to Blackpool. Signs do not look good still.

Adryan – One of the collection of Foreign Unknowns in Leeds – Brought in on 30th.

Strangest Signings – Leeds. Lots of Foreign untested players. Basically a team of misfits, not fit in previous situations. On Deadline Day – the news was rebuilding – but not great, Poleon and Smith both left but with the foreign signings happening space for these was filled already. The Leeds team has basically been rebuilt as the foreign legion – untested in England – this could go either way.  If Leeds keep looking to Cook and Mowatt – good talent for the future – maybe.

Fulham – having bought the main strike force from last year for Leeds lets see if they play them up front and improve. – McCormack £11 million, Matt Smith £500,000. Another situation where they are rebuilding but show better signs than Leeds – focusing on known quantities rather than the unknown.

It is International break – So next Championship games are on the 13th.
