Distinguishing Features

Larger than a six bedroomed house, the ISS is the largest man made object to be flown into space.  It has a wingspan of 240 feet, that is longer than a Boeing 777 and is 357 feet from one end to the other, that is the equivalent of over 3 average length football pitches! It is an incredible four times the size of the Russian Space Station, Mir.

The largest section of the International Space Station has 16 solar panels attached, along the centre of the ISS.  There are modules that serve as homes for the astronauts and their workplaces.  ESA (European Space Agency) added the Columbus Science Laboratory where experiments are carried out in a zero gravity environment.
