Best selling author Abby McCarthy (Lisa Edelstein – House) writes one of the best selling series of self help books going – The Girlfriends’ Guide series. Her book sales and indeed career, hinge on her presenting herself and her family as almost perfect. This means that when Abby and her husband Jake separate, she feels the need to hide it from everyone, her fans, friends and family, which inevitably ends in disaster and throws Abby’s life and career into chaos.
As her fans discover the truth about Abby’s marriage, they quickly turn on her, her book sales plummet and she is no longer on top. Snubbed by Mums at the private school she sends her children to and branded a fraud, Abby turns to her friends, divorcees for advice and comfort, each have their own unique way of dealing with the difficulties of ending a marriage. Lyla (Janeane Garofalo – Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp) is hot tempered and angry, Phoebe (Beau Garrett – Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior) is loving and carefree, Delia (Necar Zadegan – Extant) is a high powered lawyer and Jo (Alanna Ubach – NCIS) is Abby’s college room mate who is not afraid to speak her mind, regardless of the consequences. At the heart of it all though, they are friends, they hold each others hands and rip each others hair out in equal measure, but they are friends.
Abby’s life changes forever, as do those of her friends. The shared experiences of being in their 40s and starting out single again is what makes the show, the characters are incredibly believable and the cast magnificent. Lisa Edelstein is endearing, as well as honest in her portrayal of Abby, making it that much easier to connect with her character and go on the divorce roller coaster with her.
Hilarious and at times painfully true, Girlfriends’ Guide To Divorce is strangely romantic whilst showing the realities of divorce.
The Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce is available on DVD from 8th February 2016
