How do people learn? Memrise looks at helping people by combining 3 simple ideas together. Science, Fun and Community.
Memrise has been built to embody the very best knowledge about how your brain works, and so help the user learn as quickly and effortlessly as possible.
They use “mems” to help the user form sensory memories. They test the user continuously, always making the user’s brain work out.
“We remind you of what you’ve learned at scientifically optimized times so your memories are always growing stronger, and never forgotten.”
The Memrise method is to learn while relaxed, curious and confident. So Memrise are turning learning facts and language into a game where you grow a colourful garden of memory.
“When you learn a new word, think of it as planting a new seed in your memory. Then every time you review that memory you help it to grow a little bit – like watering a little flower. By reviewing at the right time you help it grow as fast as possible. Soon you’ll have a glorious garden full of flower-memories – it’s like a guiltless video-game!”
Memrise also look to each of its users to help others learn too. Each person will tackle each of its subjects in different ways. So the helping each other out is an key element to how progress is made.
“So with our community we’re building a kind of multimedia wonderland of learning, where videos, audio, usage, mnemonics, etymologies and much more bring your learning to life.”
The Proof is in the Action
We gave a few of the shorter courses a go to see it in action.
- Arts and Literature
- Maths and Science
- The Natural World
- History and Geography
- Memory Training
- Professional and Careers
- Standardized Tests
Picking a course – from the menus, its easy to see that language courses are its main thing (get the most views). The other sections have more variety.
For example we looked at “7A1 Quiz” by Finley8A2.
The Learning techniques of repetition and repeat was easy to pick up and learn. Great idea.
Throughout this year we will be challenging ourselves to do things. To learn new things/skills especially so we will be coming back to Memrise throughout the year.
