If you were a child of the eighties and nineties you may very well remember Moondial, a six part children’s fantasy TV show about Minty.
Minty is a thirteen year old girl who is spending the summer with her Aunt Mary. When tragedy strikes and Minty’s Mum is involved in an accident, she escapes to the grounds of a nearby mansion and discovers a magical secret. In the large gardens of the old stately house is a sundial and as the moon rises it gains a magical power that only Minty can unlock.
The sundial during the hours of the moon, is a way for Minty to travel back in time to the years of Queen Victoria’s reign. In the Victorian country house she meets two young children at first they mistake each other for ghosts, until a handshake proves that this is not the case. Eventually, Minty discovers that Tom and Sarah are plagued by evil forces that inflict cruelty on them both. Making it her aim to save the poor souls of the kids, who are now her friends, Minty has to overcome the fear of these spirits and battle them, possibly even the devil.
Hugely popular in the late eighties and early nineties on the BBC, Moondial has now been released onto DVD courtesy of Second Sight Films as from 4th May 2015. The release includes an interview with Colin Grant, the director and Minty herself, Siri Neal.
