Punch Club – Game Review

A Retro style Fighter Manager/ Turn based Fighter. Weirdness insues……       Interested? Read On…..

This game has been making the rounds on Twitch and YouTube and we got the chance to give this a go. Dam we were impressed by the hidden depth of it.  The basic storyline follows the story of the fighter you create who has to avenge their father.  Taking references from lots of movies, games and TV Shows, we were playing spot the reference for awhile.

The game breaks down into how the player wants to develop the “fighter”. Taking from the references of the fake movie posters in the garage (which you train in) – Make your fighter Jean Claude Van Damme in Kickboxer or Rocky in Rocky.  Its all up to the player.

The Moves

While seeing lots of people try the Kickboxer route – We focused on the punches. The depth is there and we love to see how far they can take this in a possible sequel.  It felt like it went as far as it could with the choices it made in development, but it felt at times like it could do more.  But this is nic-picking, its a great game.

The Training

After going to the gym and training the core stats – Winning a few fights. The best strategy is to build the home gym early, saving money to then invest it elsewhere.  Red Stats – Strength, Blue – Agility, Green – Stamina.  Each core to how the fighter created is advanced.

Advice – We tried going down the middle – it broke the fighter and added hours to our playthrough. Focus on where the fighter wants to go. Strength of a boxer, or a blue karate kick of Agility. Stamina is key to all fighters – further on in the game the more rounds are done.

The Fights

The moves picked are then used in round by round battles and with the limit of moves per round – Strategy is needed. We beat a fighter with 2 times as much strength of us with a better strategy.

We wont ruin the story as it is worth the play through.  Its not as easy as most think but strategize well and you should come out on top.  It is not a perfect game but it get a good 4/5 from us.
