Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

Hamlet by William Shakespeare is undoubtedly one of his more famous works, but within Hamlets you can find two characters that are nothing more than support for the main events, that is until Tom Stoppard got his hands on the play and turned it upside down.  Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are hilarious characters that would rival Morcombe and Wise, Laurel and Hardy or the Two Ronnies.  They work so well together that it is no surprise that someone wished to whisk them into a realm where the story of Hamlet could be told from their perspective.

6048Tim Roth and Gary Oldman play the lead roles in the 25th Anniversary edition of the film courtesy of RLJ Entertainment, although it is safe to say we still aren’t sure which is which!

As Rosencrantz and Guildenstern set off on their comedic journey, they come across many of the better known characters from Hamlet.  During this time they are not only trying to remember what their mission was, but also which of them is Rosencrantz and which if Guildenstern.  As they ponder this, the story of Hamlet moves ever forward and is seen through the eyes of this outrageous pair.  We see their reality as it overlaps with illusion and set, after set melts into one another.

6047Innovative and enjoyable, Tim Roth and Gary Oldman are able to yet again wow audiences with this performance.  They are joined on ‘stage’ by the incredibly talented Richard Dreyfuss and a fabulous cast that brings the whole story together.  There is a tremendous sense of being sat in the theater watching this film as it is fantastically theatrical and has all of the quirks and charm of a stage show, without losing the impact of being a filmed movie.

6037Rosencrantz and Guildenstern is fully remastered and will be available in a two disc special edition set that contains bonus features:
