Hayley Sparkes is the resident beauty expert on ITV’s This Morning. Working with TV personalities and celebrities, not to mention Philip and Holly! We caught up with Hayley to ask her more about herself, her career and of course beauty!
You have over 12 years experience in the Make Up Industry, but where did it all start and when did you know beauty was your passion?
Since my teenage years I have always loved make-up but when I was studying fashion at university I met an amazing make-up artist who helped changed my life. I was struggling to secure a fashion based work experience placement and she gave me the opportunity to assist her. We started behind the scenes on a TV show and I just loved it, I then found a part time job on a make-up counter whilst I was studying and it carried on from there. Art was my best subject at school and make-up is a form of artistry for the face and as every face is unique you are constantly working on a new canvas.
How different is being This Mornings resident beauty expert to other things you have done?
Working on This Morning has been a dream come true. I have grown up watching the show and I couldn’t believe it the first time I was in the studio. I have done a mixture of pre-recorded items as well as live demos and viewer make-overs. It is nerve wracking, you are often standing at a funny angle so you are not in the way of the cameras so it can make some of the live demos more of a challenge! I love my job but This Morning really has been a highlight.
What really excites you about make up at the moment?
I am constantly excited by make-up, no matter how many products I have, I always get such a rush when I try something new. I especially love it when I find a budget buy that really exceeds my expectations, I love that the high street make-up brands are really upping their game and coming up with some fantastic formulas that are more affordable for everyone.
Do you have any favourite brands?
It’s hard to narrow it down as I find products I love across many, Urban Decay and Smashbox eye-shadow palettes are a must, Illamasqua for blushers, The Vintage Cosmetic Company for false lashes, and I have also just been introduced to a new brand called Glo & Ray, their Creamy Matte Lip Colours are my latest obsession http://www.glo-ray.co.uk/
What is this seasons must have beauty look?
At the moment we are seeing a trend for the no make-up make-up look. It’s all about having the appearance of flawless, luminous looking skin, great brows, minimal shadow and clear lips. I really love this look, it’s very fresh. I’m big into tanning at the moment which goes hand in hand with creating luminous skin, I love the Cocoa Brown One Hour Tan Mousse which leaves the most natural glow.
What would you say to people looking to get into the beauty industry? Are there any particular course or experience they should be looking at getting?
My best advise would be to practice, practice, practice. Make-up as many faces as you can, start with family and friends and always experiment new looks on yourself. Qualifications are important but if you can find a talented make-up artist to assist you can learn so much having hands on practical experience. Another tip is to watch the you tube videos of toe make-up artists like Lisa Eldridge, Wayne Goss and the Pixie Woos. Don’t rule out working on a make-up counter either, most beauty brands offer great training and you will have lots of customers everyday needing your help and advise so it’s a great place to start your career.
If you could only give one piece of advice about cosmetics and doing make up, what would it be and why?
Never stop trying to learn new things, no matter how much experience you have there are always new tips and tricks to learn from other make-up artists, everyone works in different ways, always strive to be the best you can possibly be, and support other people in your industry. Help nurture up and coming MUA’s.
What is in your handbag?
I am very fortunate to be sent new products to try so I tend to swap the contents of my make-up bag around, but I can’t be without Miners fresh faced matte powder, beautiful brows eye brow palette, Becca lipgloss, a nail file, pair of tweezers and a travel pot of YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat foundation and my trusty Magnifibres Mascara.
