Diana Beard, the show’s oldest contestant … and since last night possibly its most famous … has left the latest series of The Great British Bake Off.
Who would have believed that a show about baking in a tent in the English countryside could have caused such a fuss? But no-one messes with another baker’s ice cream and gets away with it.
If you don’t know what we’re talking about, you need to watch last night’s episode of The Great British Bake Off quick-smart (or – more handily – read our review of episode 4 here); take a look at today’s newspaper; or check out Twitter. Since approximately 8.45pm last night the interweb has been in a fuss about #bingate.
Diana, who is a member of the WI and has had a reasonably successful series so far, was shown on last night’s episode removing bearded Iain’s ice cream from the freezer and NOT PUTTING IT BACK. Then, when he complained (with a groan of frustration reminiscent of Chewbacca), she told him that he had his own freezer to use for ice cream. And then she DIDN’T EVEN APOLOGISE. Iain subsequently chucked his ruined Baked Alaska into the bin and was kicked off the show by Mary and Paul.
Show insiders (including presenter Mel on Twitter last night), suggest that Diana was the victim of editing and Iain’s ice cream was only out of the freezer for a minute, but the BBC have this evening confirmed that Diana left the show after the dessert episode and will not be featuring in future episodes of the series.
The BBC have said that her early exit is due to illness rather than last night’s controversy. Iain has been quoted as saying there are no grudges between the pair and they are still friends, but it remains to be seen whether he will be reinstated to the show.
