The IHG Challenge

Recently Erisea Magazine was asked to be part of the IHG Challenge, we would be given a million points from their rewards program to spend in any way we chose.

IHG are the Intercontinental Hotel Group and they have thousands of hotels across the world waiting to provide you with a beautiful stay in a home away from home. They hold their customers in high regard and therefore like to reward them for their loyalty. The rewards program is really unique in that it provides it’s members with a number of different ways to spend the points they earn by staying within the IHG venues. Of course first and foremost the points can be used to arrange extra nights in hotels, but there is more to the rewards program than just hotel stays.
The rewards program also offers members the opportunity to be able to book flights or cars to get them to their destinations. This takes the points to a new level allowing for a complete holiday to be booked, should enough points be available.

That is not all though, as well as the vast amount of destinations and travel options, there is the chance to have a number of experiences closer to home. Red Letter Days are experiences that range from spa days to tank driving, fast cars to cookery courses. The chance to do something completely out of the ordinary and your comfort zone adds another dimension to the already exciting rewards incentives.
Along with all of this, there is a range of merchandise from boxes of sweets to iPads and also a selection of vouchers that can be used in many high street stores and restaurants.

Our challenge was to use the rewards program in a way that wouldn’t excite us and record our journey in lomography cameras. So, what did we pick?
Being very conscious if the economy and how our country really gets little recognition about its tourist options besides London and the south coast, we made the decision to have a long weekend in the amazing City of Manchester. Not your immediate thought when picking a vacation spot, but that was our point. England has so much to offer, much more than the usual haunts, so Manchester is a great place to start exploring the country.
We picked The Crowne Plaza in the centre of Manchester as our hotel and still had lots of points left.

Now we approached this challenge in a different way to how you might expect. We wanted the most out of our points and so we also chose to have two Red Letter Days. They haven’t arrived yet, but we plan in having a lovely weekend away at a spa together. Pampering ahoy!
With the remainder if our points we got a massive box of retro sweet to share at the hotel and a selection of vouchers.
We decided that the best way to showcase Manchester City centre was to have a shopping spree that included lots of lovely food and culminated in a photo shoot we ourselves had arranged separately to this challenge.

Our points went a long way and we had a massive amount of shopping vouchers at our disposal for a wide range of outlets and restaurants.
In our next article we will take you with us in trip to Manchester!
