The Sound of Music Live

Ever since Julie Andrews’ beautiful performance as Maria in The Sound of Music in 1965, audiences have been ensnared by the film and stage performances.  It is known as the world’s most popular musical by Roger’s and Hemmerstein, totally unique and utterly captivating.

When it was announced that ITV were planning a live action version of the film, people were very excited and it was a huge success.  Filmed and transmitted live, the cast had no room for error as millions watched on, now the experience can be relived on DVD and Digital Download, courtesy of ITV Studios Global Entertainment.

TSoML_5How do you solve a problem like Maria?  It seemed Mother Superior knew just what was needed to help Maria (Kara Tointon – Eastenders, Mr Selfridge)  follow her true path in life and so she sent the somewhat troublesome young postulant to help a widower, Captain von Trapp (Julian Ovenden – Downton Abbey), with his seven children.  At first it seems that the children will not accept Maria as their new governess without a fight and Captain von Trapp was a little too rigid in his view of the world for Maria’s liking.  As the children warm to her, they discover Captain von Trapp is to be married and so Maria teaches the children to be more endearing to their future step mother.

TSoML_6Love, heartbreak, joy and plenty of singing will leave you glued to TV as you watch Maria fall in love with the children and their father, but will Baroness Elsa Schraeder (Katherine Kelly – Mr Selfridge, Coronation Street) and Max Detweiler (Alexander Armstrong) stop her from revealing her secret affection for her employer, or will the rise of Nazism and the threat of war that looms in the darkness, cause them all to reevaluate their lives?

TSoML_7Spectacular and incredibly well performed, this is indeed a fantastic TV drama in its own right, as well as a fantastic tribute to the original eipc of the same name.
