With the season only 3 weeks away, there has been a lot of interesting transfer business concluded to date. The deals that have happen so far have ranged from club legends leaving to join rivals, a gathering of homegrown players to meet UEFA demands and then there have been some which make little or no sense from the outside looking in.
There have been several moves of player which are considered legends at their respective clubs. Some have left the countries which they have built their legacies. Steven Gerrard leaving his home town of Liverpool, having been informed he would not be a regular in the starting line up. And rather than line up against the team he’s followed and represented most of his life, he chose the David Beckham method of semi retirement and joined MLS side LA Galaxy. The warm weather and Hollywood back drop could have hurt either.
Bastian Schweinsteiger also left the team he’s supported since childhood and played for all his professional career. His decision to leave seemed to be motivate by the lure of a new challenge, having won everything he possible with German giants, Bayern Munich. He also started that Manchester United was the only team he would have considered leaving Munich for, a fondness for the club who his brother is an avid fan of.
If you ask many fans what player Arsenal needed to turn them into a title challenging team, they would mostly answered a keeper or a good defensive midfielder. Once Jose Mourinho decided that Thibaut Courtois was his new number one, it was obvious that Petr Cech would be on the move sooner rather than later. With a strong desire to stay in London, a move to Arsenal seemed like a perfect fit. Both Mourinho and Roman Abramovich had both been quoted as saying that they would ideally not want to sell to direct rival but Cech’s level of service to the club meant he was a special case; Who would be granted any move he wanted. Now arsenal look as strong had they looked since the invincible and perhaps they will make Chelsea pay come may by stealing the championship away from stamford bridge and delivering it to the emirates for the first time for over a decade.
Next time we will discuss the bad and ugly, from Sterling to Begovic to Casillas….. to be continued….
