Got to love a good data driven piece. “Songs to clean to” is a weird music listening sub-culture – do you pick a slow piece or a more faster piece to get the job done. Miele have provided us with some data and we ran with it.

The data was made by combing through the 998 Spotify lists that all contained the word “Cleaning” too. Lists included “cleaning the house”, “cleaning Bangers” and “spring cleaning vibes”.

We all have to do the chores but do you do it too music and if so What Song Do You Clean To?

Top 10

10 – Neon Trees – “Everyone Talks”

Got to love a good pop rock anthem with Everyone Talks.  This song appeared in 49 of the playlists.

Tied 8 – Harry Styles – “Watermelon Sugar”

How about a bit of One Direction Singer Harry Styles. His solo stuff has a different twist to the boy band and the cleaning lists tend to agree. This song appeared on 51 lists, with the roof raising song helping us clean in those hard to reach places.

Tied 8 – The Neighbourhood – “Sweater Weather”

One of the only songs on the list we did not know.  This romantic song hits the same strings as Harry Styles with 51 of 998 spotify lists picking this song.

Tied 6 – Shakira – “Hips Don’t Lie (feat. Wyclef Jean)’

This classic hit by Shakira has our hips shaking with it hitting tied 6th. This song has a great beat and introduced the world to the songstress Shakira. It appeared on 54 cleaning playlists.

Tied 6 – Dolly Parton – “9 to 5”

After a long shift at work, some people put on this classic track to get the household chores done.  Also hitting 54 lists, this has such a great rhythm to it.

5 – Mark Ronson – “Uptown Funk (feat. Bruno Mars)”

Sampled on 59 of the cleaning playlists, we are not surprised with the great rhythmic piece.  This is such a good song.

4 – Ed Sheeran – “Bad Habits”

This 2021 hit has already started appearing on cleaning playlists with 61 of the 998. Another great hit from Ed Sheeran.

3 – Olivia Rodrigo – “good 4 u”

A track we were introduced to by a random browse through friends’ playlists. A good song about someone moving on. This appears on 64 lists and we can see why.

2 – Whitney Houston – “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)”

Appearing on 76 playlists, this is the second most popular cleaning anthem and we have heard it lots of times on the radio too.

1 – TLC – “No Scrubs”

This actually surprised us a bit but it is still a great song. This appeared on 78 of the lists and picks up the prize of best song.

Our Thoughts

There seems to be a bit of a genre mix with some pop and lots of up beat R&B songs too.  All good to dance to with good beats.  We were surprised by Watermelon Sugar and Good 4 U but after listening to them – not so much.

The list can be easily defined by age of listener and in a few years, we should get a bigger tilt  to the newer stuff (from this decade).
