AWAY

Away is the latest Netflix series from Executive producer Jason Katims.  Away is a thrilling emotional drama set in an epic scale with the journey of astronauts and the sacrifices they have to make on the way.

The series focuses on American astronaut Emma Green (Hilary Swank) who prepares to lead an international crew on the first mission to Mars.  Away will show how a decision has repercussions, Emma has to reconcile her decision to leave behind her husband (Josh Charles) and teenage daughter (Talitha Bateman) when they may need her in their lives.

The series will show off the other astronauts too as the series progresses.  The journey into space will intensify and change them forever.

“Away shows that sometimes to reach for the stars, we must leave home behind.”

Pilot – Short Thoughts

The series starts at a slow pace, introducing you to the life of Emma (Hilary Swank) and her family.  Emma is living her life with her family and shows the family dynamic.  Her husband and daughter are very well cast and both show how Emma’s decision to leave will effect them.

20 minutes into the pilot, the pace begins to pick up.  The first stages of the mission to Mars, on the Moon. An incident on the space station causes fractures in the team and pushes the crew apart. It pushes the support crew too, with NASA having to make decision of the future of the mission.

In this episode Emma being the captain is put at risk in more ways than one.  The show focuses on the emotion which is great to see.

We love the dynamic of the episode with it not just focusing on the Astronauts but the people supporting their journey and their families they left behind.

Overall

Pacing feels slow to start with to set the stage but the second half of the Pilot episode got us buzzing about the series.  It pushes the emotions about life and the journey that we go on.

Cannot Wait to watch more!!!

4/5 Pilot Rating.
