This short series of posts is all about the classic tv pilots of the years that got us all hooked on them. Next up the world of IT in the Channel 4 hit The IT Crowd.
About
Aided by a tech-illiterate manager, a pair of basement dwelling dweebs make the most of life in IT at a business run by a crazy CEO.
This series starred Chris O’Dowd, Richard Ayoade and Katherine Parkinson in what would be their breakout roles on the comedy TV scene.
Does the Pilot Hold Up?
S01E01 – Yesterday’s Jam
The episode is still good, it plays on stereotypes of a nerdy IT technician, Manager who is clueless and a crazy boss are great. We especially love its focus on Moss and Roy’s antics. Jen as the useless manager who then finds her place to help the pair adds to the comedy too.
The pilot episode unfortunately has not aged that well. The use of canned laughter was a tad excessive. Jokes that might of landed without it felt oddly out of place with it.
It brings in audiences from different backgrounds as we all have been classed as an oddball, or people think we know nothing, or we might even be the boss. It pushes the buttons in the right ways and we are glad to revisit it.
