In the days of EA’s Fight Night, we loved the idea of being the next world champion.  Undisputed feels to be the spiritual successor and we got the chance to play the early access version.

About

Enter the world of boxing with more than 50 world renowned boxers from the world.  Featuring some of the world’s best in a variety of different divisions.  This early access game offers quick play fights, with promises of career mode and create a boxer modes to come.

Steam Description“Become Undisputed in the most authentic boxing game to date! Featuring true to life visuals, bone-jarring action, and more licensed boxers than ever before, Undisputed gives you unprecedented control to master every inch of the ring.”

Gameplay

In the ring, you might think it would be as simple as hitting a couple of buttons and “button bashing” to victory.  You cannot do that.

The punches make this game have a very easy port of entry.  With button bashers coming in and be able to create combos of jabs, straights and uppercuts without thinking (More than 60 individual punches are available).   However with a stamina bar,  it slowly adjusts the rhythm and in a few rounds you will be doing short combos and taking breathers in between.

The health  over 12 rounds goes down very slowly, but you are able to effect body parts too.  If you decide to go for the e.g. left side of the head,  it will slowly swell or cut and create those knockout chances.

Our only concern is at the moment, we couldn’t feel the different on being a heavyweight and a lower weight class.   We would love to see light weight fights being all about the speed and stamina of the fighter,  whilst the heavy fights being all about power and endurance.

This only breaks the surface of how in depth the game can be taken. Ideas of loose movement, changing your stance and other more niche ideas are there to play with.

Overall Thoughts (so far)

It needs more time to fully come together,  in the few hours we have played – bugs were present.   The potential is there to be a great game but it has a long way to go to get there. Career Mode and Create a Boxer mode is desperately needed to push it to be a near complete Game.

We have only scratched the surface on the game and will be playing more.  At the current price point of £24.99 (at time of writing), is it worth picking up?

Yes, based on the future potential mainly.  With tweaks to its gameplay it already has planned,  the core game will be polished enough.  Career mode will spice it up nicely and the ability to create a boxer will add that longevity much needed in the boxing game genre.
