About
Space Invaders Forever is a collection of three different games, which include:
- Space Invaders Extreme
- Space Invaders Gigamax 4 SE
- Arkanoid vs Space Invaders
Space Invaders Extreme
Comes with 16 stages with updated graphics and new immersive sound. It’s main focus is on high scores and perfecting your run.
Space Invaders Gigamax 4 SE
The team up game where up to four players can team up to clear the stages as fast as possible. This new 4-player co-op experience aims to offer new stages, gimmicks and includes some new music by Taito’s in-house sound team Zuntata.
Arkanoid vs Space Invaders
This is a mix-up clash of two arcade classics. Both iconic Taito games of the past, combine elements and push the boundaries of gameplay. It combines the Arkanoid Vaus Paddle Ship against the waves of Space Invader enemies.
Gameplay
We managed to get hold of the Switch edition of the Space Invaders Forever Collection. There will be some slight differences between this and the PS4 edition. We will now briefly talk about each game’s gameplay experience, showing off our favourite and not so favourite moments.
Space Invaders Extreme
This game sets itself apart with the constantly moving and adjusting waves of enemies. lt pushes the traditional Space Invaders theme to the next level. One minute you will be facing a old school wave, once cleared it ratchets it up a gear with a whole new style of wave straight away.
The game has set stages to pick from and has multiple play-ability with scores there to be beaten.
Arkanoids Vs Space Invaders
It twists the classic Space Invaders game in such away we loved it. Going into the game, we could not remember what Arkanoids was. Having worked out it was a traditional ball and paddle game of the past – we loved the combo.
As the player, you take control of the paddle “ship” and tackle waves and waves of enemies. The main defence of your ship is to deflect the enemies’ shots back onto them, so you win.
Being on the Switch version, it used the touch controls and had us holding the console in Portrait. It felt really unusual to start but the game is very initiative to play.
Space Invaders Gigamax 4 SE
Traditional Space Invaders with the stage extended to 4 players. If you love traditional Space Invaders and have a few good buds – this will be a breeze.
Overall
Arkanoids vs SI, is a good change of pace. It takes the elements of the ball and paddle and twists it to the Space Invaders theme well. We played this game for hours.
The Extreme game in the collection is classic twist on Space Invaders. Traditional Space Invaders is a one shot level by level game, Extreme adds shooting bonuses and the levels change enough to keep our interest.
The Gigamax version is more of a one shot for party night with 4 people. It feels a bit out of place.
The Collection is only really let down by the Gigamax game, so that takes it from a 4 to a 3/5 rating.
